Stock market reopening hampered by tube delays

elays: City workers were hit by signal failure this morning
12 April 2012

Thousands of Square Mile staff were late for work today as the markets reopened after a signal failure forced the suspension of the Waterloo & City line throughout the morning peak.

A signal failure at Waterloo halted all services between the mainline station and Bank.
The problem prevented any trains running from the 6 am scheduled start of service.

Commuters instead had to use other Tube services and the bus, adding at least half an hour to journeys, to reach the City.

The 1.5 mile long line is the shortest on the network serving just the two stations.
Known as "The Drain" by its 33,000 a day users it provides a valuable short cut to the City and Canary Wharf connecting with the Docklands Light Railway at Bank.

A spokesman for Transport for London (TfL) said: "The Waterloo and City Line was suspended this morning from the beginning of traffic due to a multiple points failure at Waterloo station."

He said engineers are on site "and working on restoring the service as soon as possible."
