Study to see impact on children of school reforms

12 April 2012

An investigation into how sweeping education reforms will affect children has been set up by a London borough facing huge changes.

It will look at the impact of free schools, academies and increased university tuition fees on children in Camden over the next 10 years.

In September, one of the country's first free schools will be launched in the borough, which suffers from a shortage of primary school places.

The Independent Education Commission, being set up by local schools and Camden council, will also look at unemployment among young people and the effects of scrapping the Education Maintenance Allowance.

Angela Mason, deputy leader of Camden, said: "By taking the unique step of establishing this Commission we can engage with not just the community but with children and young people, allowing them the opportunity to shape the long-term vision for education in Camden."
