Suicide police chief had five lovers at work

The married police chief who committed suicide on a mountain was conducting affairs with at least five colleagues, it emerged today.

Michael Todd, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, was found dead last March near the summit of Mount Snowdon after downing gin and sleeping pills.

Investigators have uncovered the father-of-three's complicated love life, which he tried to conceal from his wife Carolyn while running one of the country's biggest forces, according to leaked details of an inquiry into his death.

All of the women in the force with whom 50-year-old Mr Todd had an affair declined to be interviewed by investigators, the leaked report says.

But it is alleged his force had been made aware of one of Mr Todd's relationships with a colleague.

It is understood senior officers at the force were interviewed and said they were unaware of his affairs with staff. However, rumours of Mr Todd's affairs were an "open secret" among many.

The report by Sir Paul Scott-Lee, chief constable of West Midlands Police, is due to be passed to Greater Manchester Police Authority this month. It is believed to conclude that despite Mr Todd's tangled life, his affairs did not affect his job performance.

The inquest into his death last October heard that Mr Todd sent intimate text messages to his wife and at least seven other women in the hours before his death. One final text message asked for forgiveness in "another life". It came five days after he had been confronted by his wife about one of his affairs — with Angie Robinson, chief executive of Manchester chamber of commerce.

He was found face down in the snow, frozen to death, the next day, 11 March, at Bwlch Glas.

Neither the Greater Manchester Police Authority nor West Midlands Police would comment today about the leaked report.
