Surfer torn apart in shark attack

A Frenchman has been killed by sharks while surfing off the Pacific island of New Caledonia.

A police spokesman said the 19-year-old tried to get back on a small wooden boat when he saw fins circling him but was attacked by several sharks. "They bit off his arm and his leg before his friend managed to pull him on board still alive. But by the time emergency teams reached him as they got back to the beach, he was dead."
