Tantric master Dr Earth is Tories' latest weapon at election

"Spiritual journey": Andrew Charalambous with Jade Jagger
12 April 2012

A nightclub owner and self-proclaimed "tantric master" called Dr Earth has been selected by the Tories to contest the Edmonton seat.

Andrew Charalambous, 38, who claims "all you have to do is dance to save the world", runs club nights using a hi-tech floor which generates electricity from the movement of dancers.

A fruitarian, he is also a barrister and volunteer police officer, and has a PhD in the parallels between Plato's utopia and Spartan society. A description of Dr Earth on his website says: "He has completed one of the profoundest spiritual journeys in history. We know of no other living person who has travelled to so many countries on a spiritual quest and been taught by so many great spiritual masters from such a diverse plethora of spiritual systems.

"He is a tantric master initiated in India. He has dated some of the most beautiful women in the world.

"Andrew describes himself as the first male feminist. He says 'women are definitely the superior sex. Society needs less playboys and more men with family values. I am nothing compared to my brothers who are decent family men with children'."

The seat is held by Andy Love for Labour and he will defend a majority of 8,000 at the next election.

Mr Charalambous said: "I am the man of all seasons. The person people in semi-detached houses will vote for, the person people in high-rise council estates will vote for. We need politicians people can relate to."

The eco-warrior also installed waterless urinals, a wind turbine and solar panels at his club4climate change in King's Cross nightclub Surya.

He was selected for the seat this week but the choice has surprised some members of the party.

One Tory parliamentary source said: "It's nuts.

"It's one thing to stand by the 'vote blue, go green' theory, but to say we can solve climate change by dance? The scary thing is he could win the seat. It's a car crash waiting to happen."

Mr Charalambous stood for the safe Labour seat of Tottenham in 1992 but lost out to Bernie Grant.
