Teacher mauled to death by wolves while jogging in Alaska village

Multiple injuries: Candice Berner seen on a crab fishing trip
12 April 2012

A teacher out jogging was killed by wolves, Alaska state troopers said today.

The body of Candice Berner, 32, was found surrounded by wolf tracks near the village of Chignik Bay, 500 miles south-west of the capital Anchorage.

A post-mortem examination said the cause of death was "multiple injuries due to animal mauling".

Colonel Audie Holloway, trooper commander, said: "There are no other carnivores in that area out and active. There were wolf tracks all around the body. From the number of prints at the scene, we're thinking there were possibly two, three, maybe four."

Villagers took their children to school and armed patrols on snowmobiles were on the lookout for wolves.
