The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. the third and fourth-highest women's earners at Wimbledon

They are Wimbledon's wealthiest tennis players. Together the 10 men and 10 women are worth an astonishing £116 million.

And, despite Wimbledon offering lower prizes to women than men, it is the female players at the SW19 tournament who are the better-off.

The 10 highest-earning females have together accumulated more than £59million in prize money during their careers, while the top-earning men have netted £57.7 million.

Top earner and this year's Wimbledon wildcard entry Martina Navratilova, who has won more than £11 million in career prize money to date, has the advantage of a career spanning 29 years. The top-earning man, Goran Ivanisevic, has pulled in more than £10.7 million during his 16-year professional career. But the others have made their cash in the course of only a handful of years - and the second-richest man, Lleyton Hewitt, has won less than the top four women.

The second-placed woman, Lindsay Davenport, has accumulated £8.9 million since she joined the professional circuit in 1993. And the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, are in third and fourth place - despite their domination of world tennis.

Venus, who has won a total of £7,093,000, and Serena, who has won £6,831,000, frequently play as doubles partners to increase their earnings - but this year at Wimbledon will only play in the singles.

With £6.4 million, Hewitt, who is seventh seed in the men's tournament, is only slightly ahead of girlfriend Kim Clijsters, who is worth £4.4 million and placed seventh among the women.

Today, Tim Phillips, chairman of the All England Club and the Championships, defended the pay gap. He said: "We like to think our prize money is driven by market data and fairness. Women play much shorter matches, while men feel they cannot succeed in both singles and doubles."
