Thousands of children in 10-mile commute to school

12 April 2012

Thousands of children are forced to take a 10-mile journey to London schools every day, according to a government report.

More than one fifth of pupils attend secondary schools outside their boroughs and almost 12,200 travel at least five miles each way to class and back.

Parents were prepared to send their children on the longest trips to attend popular single-sex, grammar and faith schools, the Department for Education study found.

In Hackney, pupils travelled just 0.9 miles to school, while children in Hammersmith and Fulham had a commute of 2.3 miles each way.

Children in Redbridge were most likely to go to school by car, while Richmond had the highest rates of cycling.
