13 April 2012

A toddler has died after a television apparently toppled over and fell on him.

The one-year-old boy from Heol Frank, Penlan, Swansea, was taken to the city's Morriston hospital on Thursday afternoon following the accident but he later died.

The boy has been named by the local Evening Post newspaper as Ghazi Riyaz Mohammed.

The paper said the boy's parents have two other children and were thought to be from Sri Lanka and seeking asylum in this country.

Family friend Fadia Nuur told the paper: 'It is very sad. I spoke to the family and they told me the television had fallen on the baby.

'They are very upset. I have been up all night crying for them.

'I know the family well, they help take my family to school.'

Swansea councillor Hazel Morris said she had visited the family this morning.

'I went over to the house to pay my respects to the family and it is very, very sad,' she said. 'The father kept saying "it was just a minute, just a minute".'

Councillor Morris's husband, Vyvyan, added: 'The family will have lots of support from (the) Penlan (community).'

An Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'We received a call at 3.01pm and had a vehicle on the scene at 3.06pm and conveyed the child to Morriston Hospital.'

The spokesman said ambulance control received a report of a one-year-old child who was possibly unconscious and had a bleeding nose.

He added: 'The crew conveyed him to Morriston hospital and the incident was handed over to them.'

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: 'We are aware of this tragic incident and at present police are investigating the circumstances surrounding it.'
