Tories have three point lead over Labour in latest poll

12 April 2012

The Tories have swept into a three-point lead over Labour in the polls.

An Ipsos MORI survey for the Sun puts David Cameron's party on 41 per cent, with Labour on 38 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on just 11.

The figures suggest a remarkable turnaround in the parties' fortunes over the last fortnight.

Gordon Brown and David Cameron fight it out at Prime Minister's Questions - but Cameron seems to have the upper hand for now

Polls at the end of the Tories' barnstorming conference week in Blackpool, which saw them unveil eye-catching pledges to lift millions out of inheritance tax and stamp duty, put the two main parties neck and neck.

There has been a ten-point shift since the most recent Ipsos MORI survey, conducted at the end of last month, which had Labour in a commanding lead on 41 to the Tories' 34.

The latest figures will make grim reading for Gordon Brown because they suggest his offer of a watered-down version of the Tories' inheritance tax policy has failed to revive Labour's fortunes.

The poll was conducted on Wednesday, after the Prime Minister suffered a mauling at the hands of Mr Cameron in the most acrimonious Commons clash between party leaders for more than a decade.

The Tory leader labelled Mr Brown a 'phoney' who had bottled out of a snap election and then shamelessly purloined Tory policies on tax.

Mr Brown's personal ratings appear to have been badly dented, as well as Labour's overall standing.

The Lib Dems' showing is the latest in a series to suggest they are being dangerously squeezed by the two main parties.

It is likely to increase speculation that their leader Sir Menzies Campbell could be ousted before the next election. An 11-point result at an election would see them lose dozens of their 63 seats.
