12 April 2012

A UNION Jack which flew at the Battle of Trafalgar on this day in 1805, believed to be the last one in existence, made a record £384,000 at auction in London today - £370,000 above estimate.

The flag, right, which bears holes caused by splinter fragments, was presented to Lieutenant James Clephan by the crew of HMS Spartiate after the battle. It was sold by one of his descendants, who now lives in Australia.
