Transport Secretary Philip Hammond looks at more Heathrow flights

Shake up: Philip Hammond is considering changing regulations at Heathrow
12 April 2012

More late night and early morning flights at Heathrow may be allowed under a shake-up of aviation rules.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond signalled that the regulations on night flights at the airport may be changed next year.

At present 2,550 take-offs or landings are allowed at Heathrow between 11.30pm and 6am during the six-month winter season and 3,250 in summer. But the Government today published a paper exploring how this could be changed.

Possibilities include a shorter period with a total ban on night flights but more planes landing or taking off either side.
