Tube chaos on three lines as man wanders onto tracks

Embankment station: Passengers screamed with alarm on a platform as a driver narrowly avoided a man on the tracks
12 April 2012

Hundreds of thousands of Tube passengers suffered hours of delays after a man wandered onto the tracks at Embankment station.

Passengers screamed as the driver of a westbound District line train saw the man at the last moment and slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting him.

Commuters then suffered long delays during last night's rush hour, while other problems on the Victoria and Jubilee lines added to the chaos.

When the man was seen on the Embankment tracks, District and Circle line services were halted and the station was closed as emergency services attended.

The man suffered abrasions and bruises and was taken away. British Transport Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

All Circle line services were withdrawn and the District suspended between Aldgate East and South Kensington.

Embankment station remained closed until 7.30pm and services were restored by 8pm. Hammersmith & City line trains, which share track with the Circle line, also suffered disruption because of the knock-on effect.

Stalled trains on the Jubilee and Victoria line added to the chaos. Jubilee line services were suspended between North Greenwich and Stratford, while Victoria line services were disrupted by a broken down train at Euston which had to be taken out of service.
