Tube union chiefs reject invitation to talks with Boris Johnson

12 April 2012

Union bosses today snubbed Boris Johnson by turning down his offer of talks on the future of the Tube.

Aslef general secretary Keith Norman refused an invitation to discuss strategic issues such as transport funding and the Olympics.

The Mayor had been under political pressure to meet the unions after a round of strikes. His supporters claim he has now taken the sting out of Labour's criticisms of him.

But City Hall insiders said no invitation would be extended to Bob Crow's RMT, which has held several strikes over Tube station staffing and which the Mayor feels is too ready to threaten industrial action.

Mr Norman said Aslef was in "very constructive" talks with Transport for London. He added: "I see no point in another meeting amid negotiations."

The Mayor's spokesman said: "He is disappointed by this."
