Two prizes for our Dispossessed campaign at British Press Awards

12 April 2012

The London Evening Standard's Dispossessed campaign scooped two major honours at the British Press Awards - the newspaper industry's equivalent of the Oscars.

Our series of articles highlighting poverty in London was named Campaign of the Year and also won the Cudlipp Award for outstanding popular journalism.

Judges praised the campaign, which has raised £5 million for charity, for demonstrating the best traditions of "investigative flair, socially responsible journalism and tenacious pursuit of the target".

Organised by the Society of Editors to recognise the best of British journalism, judges at last night's ceremony at the Savoy highly commended the Standard's David Cohen in the Feature Writer of the Year category for his hard-hitting articles exposing unseen poverty in the capital. He was praised for "inspirational features" that "involved every reader and made life-changing differences".

Also shortlisted were Evening Standard City editor Chris Blackhurst for Business Writer of the Year and Jeremy Selwyn for Photographer of the Year.

Described as a "call to arms" by Prince William, the Dispossessed campaign has resulted in immediate support for groups combating poverty in London and created a lasting legacy of grants. Money has flooded in from readers to support the initiative, which last month received
£1 million from the Big Lottery Fund. It is the first such grant given to a newspaper campaign.

Stephen Hammersley, chief executive of the Community Foundation Network which administers the Dispossessed fund, said today: "There was something special about the Standard's commitment to supporting resourceful Londoners who have the motivation and commitment to transform life chances for others. We are delighted that this has been recognised by these awards."
