US power plant explosion kills five

12 April 2012

An explosion has killed at least five people and injured 12 at a US plant producing natural gas.

The blast, which sent a ball of fire 40ft into the air, was felt miles away. Up to 100 other employees were feared buried under rubble in Middletown, Connecticut.

Fire chiefs said five people were unaccounted for, but an official warned that rescue crews were still unable to reach some areas where victims may be.

Workers at O&G Industries were purging the gas line, clearing it of air, when the explosion happened. Deputy fire marshal Al Santostefano said here were "piles of rubble everywhere, debris everywhere".

"In some places the debris is as high as 10 feet."
