Virgin America backs Airbus

13 April 2012

SIR Richard Branson's new US discount airline Virgin America plans to buy or lease up to 105 Airbus aircraft, its chairman Fred Reid said.

Some of the first 18 planes will be delivered in early 2005. This is a blow to Boeing which was hoping for the order.

Virgin America is still seeking investors and has yet to disclose its planned routes, which will be within the US.

Branson is believed to be interested in a hub in Washington or Boston. He could also be interested in a shuttle service which ferries passengers hourly from New York to Washington and Boston.
