Virgin’s latest set-top box ‘can predict the programmes you’ll want to see’

12 April 2012

Virgin today unveiled a set-top box that it claims can predict which TV shows owners will like.

The company hopes the gadget, which will also enable viewers to download apps giving access to services such as Twitter and Facebook, will help it take on Sky.

Viewers will be able to tell the box which shows they like and don't like. It will then analyse their viewing habits to automatically record new programmes.

"For the first time, viewers will have a truly personalised viewing experience," said Cindy Rose, Virgin Media's executive director of digital entertainment.

Virgin has joined forces with US firm Tivo for the service, which will become available early next year.

It will initially come with a handful of apps, but Virgin today said it plans to open an app store for the box within months.

It also has a built-in cable modem, allowing it to access online services such as iPlayer and websites.
