Warning over abuses quiz

The Government was branded " intrusive" today over plans to ask pregnant women if they were beaten up by their partner.

Doctors and midwives will be told to quiz mothers-to-be when they come in for check-ups as part of a crackdown on domestic violence.

The idea follows research showing almost a third of cases get worse when a woman is pregnant. But critics said it could upset some women, deter victims from attending screenings or cause family rows.

Former Tory minister Ann Widdecombe said: "This is carpet-bombing everybody for the sake of getting information about a minority."
