Woman spared jail over £1.5m fraud

A WOMAN 'obsessed with playing the stock market' was today spared jail after attempting to defraud a life assurance company of £1.5m.

Christine Ireland, 37, tried to cheat the stock market using a bond scheme run by her former employer, Allied Dunbar.

Ireland, from Crawley, Sussex, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of false accounting between November 1999 and September 2000 and asked for a further 22 counts to be taken into consideration.

Judge Robert Prior gave her a two-year suspended sentence.
