YouTube videos watched a billion times a day

12 April 2012

Videos on YouTube are being viewed more than a billion times a day, it was announced today.

Celebrating the third anniversary of Google's acquisition of the video sharing site, YouTube chief executive and founder Chad Hurley wrote in a message for the YouTube blog: "Today, I'm proud to say that we have been serving well over a billion views a day on YouTube.

"This is a great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you."

YouTube was launched in February 2005, quickly growing into one of the most popular websites on the internet.

Google bought the site for 1.65 billion US dollars (£883 million) in shares in October 2006.

Every minute, 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube, the equivalent of Hollywood releasing 134,000 full-length movies each week.
