Zara Phillips looking for 'the right horse' to take her to 2012 Olympics

12 April 2012

Zara Phillips is pinning her hopes on two horses - High Kingdom and Lord Lauries - to try and get her to the London 2012 Olympics.

Once Phillips, 30, has got her July 30 wedding to England rugby player Mike Tindall out of the way the focus will, once again, be on the London 2012 equestrian competition.

"I probably have two horses at the moment that I would say have the best chance of going, or have the capability of going," she said.

"A horse called High Kingdom and a horse called Lord Lauries. They are both very good at all three disciplines which is what you need for the sport."

Phillips is looking for the sort of magic she had with her ride Toytown, with whom she won the European and world titles in 2005 and 2006 to get into the British team.

She said: "You go about choosing the horses you get on with.

"It is very much a partnership sport so you have to work on everything together to get the job done, that would be the most important way of looking for the right horse."

A last-minute injury to Toytown robbed her of the chance of competing at the 2008 Olympics, where she had already qualified as part of the GB eventing line-up.

It means that Phillips, a UK Olympic ambassador for Samsung, is now hoping to make her Olympic debut on home soil.

"I train seven days a week, competitions every weekend all the way from March through October. It's a long business... it's a lot of hard work," she said.

"There is a lot of work to keep the combination in one piece but hopefully we will get there and it will be a dream come true.

"Taking part in London would be a massive dream for me personally, the pinnacle of my career because everyone wants to go to the Olympics in every sport so it would be a massive honour."

Neither qualification nor having a ride who avoids injury are certainties for Phillips or any of her rivals.

She said: "It is an exciting opportunity for me, obviously I haven't been able to get to the Olympics as an athlete yet but being involved with Samsung is really exciting.

"Unfortunately, with horses, injury can prevent you from taking part so I am looking forward to being involved in some way."
