Advertorial: Getting your garden ready for spring

22 February 2013

When April comes around, this is the time to think about getting your garden ready for spring with the anticipation of a long warm summer ahead. While it may not be warm enough to stay outside for long, there are many jobs you can do in the garden to prepare.

One of the first things that comes to mind when considering getting your garden ready for spring is your old garden furniture. If you have left it outside to fend for itself through the winter then it may need sprucing up or even replacing. Hopefully you will have covered your garden benches and patio furniture and if so you may have to do nothing more than uncover and dust off. if its time to replace worn out garden furniture then very early spring is the time to take advantage of a garden furniture sale.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden room in your garden this too may also benefit from a spring clean. This is the time to get out the paint or wood stain and revamp your garden room to get it looking new and ready for use in the summer. Give the windows a clean and air out the interior to ensure that it is nice and fresh for when you are ready to start using it again.

Looking around your garden you may have noticed that despite the cold winter months the weeds have come through it yet again and spring is the perfect time for weeding. Getting the weeds out with their roots now may save you having to resort to weed killer later in the summer. Spring is also the time to give your lawn its first cut of the year and the same applies to any bushes, privet hedges or conifers in your garden. Following the first cut give the lawn a good rake and this will remove any debris that has collected on the grass over winter.

Once you have tackled the weeds you can then set about giving the flower borders a tidy up. Remove any dead flowers or plants and give the stems and branches a trim if needed. You may also wish to break up the soil in preparation for planting and even spread a little compost and fertilizer on the soil to feed it prior to planting.

Getting all these little tasks out of the way now and by preparing your garden for spring will ensure that you get the most out of it when the time comes to enjoy your garden by relaxing on your garden furniture during the summer months.
