In recent weeks celebrities have been using their platforms to encourage people to vote, from Kendall Jenner to Meghan Markle.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who prefers to stay out of the spotlight between movie projects, has lent his star power to a new voting PSA - telling people “don’t wait.”

DiCaprio provided the voiceover for an episode in the Netflix and Vox Media series Whose Vote Counts, Explained.

Shared exclusively by People, the video saw DiCaprio break down the history of voting: “In 1775, voting was a privilege almost exclusively for white men with property.”

“All of us may have been created equal but we’ll never actually be equal until we all vote,” he continued, “So don’t wait.”

Two other voters also were featured in the video, with one woman saying voting “has been a battlefield in American democracy” as another asked, “If your vote didn’t matter, why the hell are so many systems and people trying so hard to prevent you from voting?”

The series, which is currently streaming on Netflix, also includes the likes of Selena Gomez and John Legend speaking about the history and significance of voting.

Both Democrat and Republican politicians are also included, with Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Stacey Abrams and Republicans Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Kasich.

In the lead up to the November election, many stars have used their millions-strong social media platforms to encourage people to vote alongside working with organisations such as HeadCount and Vote Save America.

Election Day in the United States will be held on November 3, though many are urging people to vote earlier in mail-in ballots, a move which has been a topic of contention for President Donald Trump. Trump and his vice president Mike Pence are set to face off against Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
