Live in London but can only just cover the rent? You can still decorate your space in style. Key buys — for £50 or less — will refresh a tired room as much as a quick paint job.

This spring, look to lo-fi minimalist taste and use raw materials such as concrete, slate and unpolished wood for an industrial edge, or jazz up an exposed filament bulb with some brightly coloured flex.

Inexpensive yet elegant, linen is also having a moment. Use pieces as table runners, cushion covers or in the bedroom to soften the look and add hints of colour to finish the ‘luxe loft’ effect.

If you can't justify spending £180 on a Le Creuset casserole dish, opt for Sainsbury's version instead (£45).

Blue and white enamel is a British design classic that gives you good bang for your buck. Durable and unbreakable, it can even be used on hobs.

Scatter quirky glassware around your home to add a little texture - experiment with bubbled and coloured pieces.
