Revered for its surf-stopping swimwear and its glistening Gold Coast style, Australian brand Zimmermann is as Antipodean as they come. And yet on the New York Fashion Week catwalk, surrounded by bronzed beauties sporting its signature ruffle trimmed floral dresses, the label couldn't be more at home if it tried.

Nicky Zimmermann, who runs the Sydney based brand along with her sister Simone, has long understood the vital connection between New York women and the aesthetic she stays close to. It is this knowledge that drives her to show her collections here season after season and the reason the brand is a failsafe among in the know American women.

Zimmermann's latest production, a homage to the two sisters' clubbing days, was no exception. A celebration of the young, creative teen Zimmermann - and suburban Australian girls like her - used to be, the collection had an unmistakable Eighties twist with Victoriana ruffles a running theme.

One part New Romantic, another part glossy urbanite, the collection included lattice detail skirts, corseted at the waist, and swooshing floral dresses.

Keen to emphasise the idea of customisation and craft, there was no set silhouette but a variation of shapes.

The finishes were equally haphazard with cropped tops and tailoring left raw at the seams.

Trousers with low slung sports waistbands lent a sense of ease to this collection.

But as is always the case with this brand, it is undoubtedly the dresses on offer today that are likely to be its most significant where sales are concerned.

One sheer delicate off shoulder style in stark white looked set to delight the women who come to Zimmermann for special occasion outfits, while a series of thigh high ruffle trim dresses crafted from realms of draped silk and tulle thrilled the New York party girls who sat front row.
