Flamenco frills and matador chic from Moschino

While so many fashion shows come with complex themes and obscure reference points, Moschino is different, and is instead known for its visual puns and jovial approach.

Its spring/summer collection, unveiled today in Milan, was a typically light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek offering.

Moschino's creative director Rossella Jardini took the baking hot climates of New Mexico and Spain as her starting point. Flamenco frills, toreador jackets and Navajo ponchos were key components.

Embroidery added detail to loose-fitting dresses and was braided to look like macramé, while black lace was layered onto sculpted jackets and petticoats. Matador hats and red and black floral head-dresses were worn with gold hooped earrings.

As the show progressed, it seemed the designer was challenging her customers to a game of Cowboys and Indians. The cowboys - models who wore wide-brimmed stetson hats and suede biker jackets trimmed with swinging fringing - appeared alongside Jardini's Native Americans who wore suede dresses detailed with beads in punchy colours with ponchos.
