Jonathan Saunders: a girlie collection with a cool edge - and chunky tractor-soled pool shoes

Jonathan Saunders has already cemented his position as one of the capital’s best-loved red-carpet designers, and last night he suggested he had his eye on infiltrating the everyday outfits of fashion die-hards with a collection which focused on daywear. Seperates came in the form of loose-fitting sheer T-shirts, fluid satin shorts and track pants - undoubtedly the highlight of his latest spring/summer collection, unveiled at Tate Britain.

The Scottish designer has a gift when it comes to blending colour, and fused luscious claret, deep violet and stone for great effect. Skirts, which sat low on the models' waists, came detailed with delicate appliqué flowers and added an easy sense of femininity.

The result was a girlie collection with a decidedly cool edge.

Picking up on one of this summer’s key footwear trends, Saunders presented a series of chunky tractor-soled pool-shoes which are certain to be a key money spinner for the label when they hit stores next year. A series of bomber jackets printed with oversized chrysanthemum motifs will also delight fans who return to the designer for his ability to produce a feminine aesthetic which is simultaneously easy to wear.

The designer’s offering for eveningwear was less inclusive. Satin bishop sleeve dresses cutaway at the waistline and tied with thin spaghetti straps were among the show’s more problematic pieces.
