The new luxury labels defying fast fashion

These brands are the antithesis of fast fashion

Ssōne

Founded by Caroline Smithson, a former McQueen and Proenza Schouler designer, this new London-based label takes the notion of socially conscious style to a new level. With a focus on craftsmanship and rare, undervalued techniques, Ssōne looks to provide new wardrobe staples for the woman who wants to make a thoughtful choice.

The focus is on sustainable textiles — denim, a mixture of organic cotton and recycled polyester — supplied by ISKO™, a mill which holds the EU Ecolabel award for environmental excellence and supports a local industry in Lancashire, while dyes are made from a mix of foraged and organically grown plants from France. Also motivated by the notion of community, the label will run a non-profit crafting association alongside the mainline fashion brand. Ssōne is set to make waves with the consciously understated. Colville

With a focus on the joy of creating instead of fashion trends, this colourific label is the brainchild of former Marni designers Kristin Forss, Molly Molloy and and British Vogue’s former fashion director Lucinda Chambers.

Marrying tailoring — Forss’s design USP — with Chambers’s obsession with print and Molloy’s ability to straddle both worlds, the label is about non-trend-led clothes that ooze with integrity.

At Colville’s heart is the idea that the hamster-wheel approach to fashion trends is vulgar, with clothes created with thought and intention very much its driving force.

There’s also a focus on empowering its customers with clothes that instil confidence in the wearer without making her feel like she’s in fancy dress. (colvilleofficial.com)

Kassl

Founded in Amsterdam by a group of friends, Kassl is, in its own words, “a single-product fashion brand devoted to manufacturing the perfect, everlasting coat in a democratic cut”.

To this end, it’s a dream for those looking for clothes that are built to last because long-shelf-life style is its DNA. The coat has glued seams and back vents, making it water-repellent and breathable.

Functional details include metal ring button fastenings with serious staying power. (kassleditions.com)
