Oscar de la Renta’s legacy may be built upon show-stopping gowns fit for a First Lady, but last night the storied fashion house began a more relaxed chapter in its history as new creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim unveiled their debut collection at New York Fashion Week.

Taking up the mantle from designer Peter Copping, who headed up the label for two years following the death of the brand’s late, great founder in 2014, the pair injected a youthful energy into the house’s signature codes with an offering brimming with cool, contemporary options for the modern luxury shopper.

The husband and wife team, who launched their careers working within the design team at Oscar de la Renta for a combined total of 18 years, have already earned their stripes as far as an intimate understanding of the label is concerned.

And last night’s showcase demonstrated that they are also capable of forging a bright future for the brand too.

Bright was certainly the operative word, as the designers paired off-kilter colour combinations - from pink trousers with tangerine knits to lilac coats layered over mint green jumpsuits - to great effect.

A series of classic voluminous black tie gowns - a trademark during de la Renta’s heyday - also proved that the duo were keen to keep the house’s diehard fans on side.

But this was a show of two halves.

The homecoming to the celebrated fashion house was combined with a showcase of the design duo’s own line Monse, which they launched in 2015 and will continue to create alongside their role at de la Renta.

Opening proceedings, the duo’s plucky young startup label held its own alongside one of the most prestigious names of New York fashion.

In line with the modern woman’s appetite for eveningwear capable of withstanding a day in the office first, cocktail attire was reassuringly low-key.

Classic suiting and tailored coats were pulled apart and reconstructed into dresses certain to please executive types with places to go after-dark. Shearling trim aviator jackets and sateen anoraks also turned sequin paillette skirts into an understated choice.

It’s a canny move by the pair, as Monse is rapidly gaining admirers amongst A-listers including Brie Larson and Margot Robbie.

As such, they were sure to include a host of fluid velvet and silk gowns, which came in punchy shades of scarlet, cobalt and ochre and dripping in sequins, to help Hollywood’s next hot young starlet stand out on the red carpet.
