Rosamund Pike defied odds to become one of the best dressed guests on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday night, as she channeled her Saltburn matriarch character Elspeth Catton while disguising a nasty skiing accident with a well-placed Philip Treacy veil.

Looking every inch the English eccentric — Isabella Blow would be proud — Pike’s black veil and lace, corseted gown was an archive Dior Couture look from autumn /winter 2019. She finished the look with stacked, black platform heels and, for the eye-catching finish, a funeral ready apple-shaped veil from the London-based milliner.

On the red carpet, Pike revealed this was a tactful decision. "Well I had an accident over Christmas, actually," she explained. "I had a skiing accident."

"It's not what you want when you're going to the Golden Globes on the seventh of January. On the 26th of December, my face was entirely smashed up." Once inside the awards, hosted at the The Beverly Hilton hotel, Pike removed the headpiece and looked to have healed quickly.

Nevertheless, the 44-year-old Gone Girl actor was not for staying at home. Pike was nominated for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her part in Emerald Fennell’s hit film Saltburn, where she played the couture-loving, eloquently spoken, lady of the country house. On the night, she lost to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her part in The Holdovers.

The outfit can be credited to stylist Leith Clark, the London-based stylist and editor, whose other clients count Lucy Boynton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. It comes after another star turn from Pike at the dawn of the awards season; the actor opted for a drop waist, peach-toned tulle gown from Molly Goddard’s spring summer 2024 collection at Vanity Fair And Amazon MGM Studios' party on Saturday (January 6) night.

May the Elspeth effect continue.
