If you want an unusual indicator of economic growth, look for a noticeable bulge in men’s underwear. Apparently sales go up when business is booming. Selfridges reported a 28 per cent explosion in men’s pants this year. For me, the Muhammad Ali of boxers is the new range from Derek Rose with its innovative hands-free magnetic closures and jersey-covered waistbands. Swiss brands Hanro (which opens a store on South Molton Street this week) and Zimmerli are also heavyweight contenders. Quite punchy, but then you can afford it.
