David Williams: Honda Integra gives you the best of both worlds

Game changer: the Honda Integra

How do you categorise the swoopy-looking Honda Integra — scooter or motorcycle?

The relatively large 17in cast wheels, big 745cc engine and general mass of the machine shout “bike” but the (token) “notch” in front of the seat where the tank would normally reside, the leg shields and chair-like riding position say “maxi scooter”.

Truth is it’s more of a crossover, and is at home in town or on longer motorway journeys.

Scooter riders will like the comfy ease with which it can be ridden. There’s no manual clutch — where the clutch lever would normally be there’s one for the rear brake, as it has automatic transmission.

There’s plenty of weather protection from those effective legshields and high screen. But scooterists will be disappointed by the lack of under-seat storage — there’s not even enough room for a helmet. Priced at £7,799, with a claimed 81.6mpg, this is a utilitarian machine. That ‘notch’ is a bit of an illusion too; this is no step-thru — you still have to throw your leg over, bike-style.
