David Williams: Layer up to keep out the chill

7 March 2014

What do you wear to keep warm near the Arctic Circle? It seemed the perfect opportunity to put motorcycle clothing firm EDZ’s thermal layers to the ultimate test.

Their proud boast is that — being based in Cumbria and with a rugged national park nearby — they’re well-placed to develop their products in a tough natural environment. It shows, and we’ve reported on their midlayer Microfleece before; now it was time to test their base layers, separate tops and leggings (£40 each), made from 200g merino wool.

Their range is tailored to fit under close-fitting motorcycle gear and regular riders know the importance of getting this right. Anything non-breathable is a no-no.

While driving on the lake, they proved highly effective and comfortable. They’re made from 100 per cent super-fine merino wool, which helps combat odours and feels comfortable on the skin.

Close-fitting, they stay in place and keep the chill completely at bay. As for EDZ’s claim their base layers work equally in warm as cold conditions, we shall have to see, but for now, winter riders have never had it so good. More at edzlayering.com
