Road test: Nissan Juke N-Tec

A street-smart Juke, says David Williams

The more time you get in some cars, the more you like them, and the trendy-looking Nissan Juke is a great case in point.

It could be — in fact it was, virtually — made for London (it was styled, in part, at Nissan’s Paddington studios). It has that nice high-up riding position Londoners love for seeing over traffic and dimensions compact enough to squeeze into very tight spaces and yet still has good seating for four (five if you’re feeling cosy).

On a round trip recently, we headed to Oxfordshire carrying four people, all that a family picnic for 16 entails, and with the air-con on full-blast. And still, the 1.5dci pulled well, delivering punchy performance and delivering 50mpg.

I’ve become used to the ride, too. Although it’s a little firm in town, it handles sleeping policemen well and smooths out very nicely indeed at cruising speeds. The other aspect I’m enjoying is the D-drive “toy”, which alters throttle and steering response, ranging through eco, sports or normal and the difference is notable.

Is the Juke as much fun as it looks? On the open road, yes, as the quick-acting steering and taut tide are nicely in tune with the styling.
