See inside the only workshop in London creating handcrafted globes

Thomas Triebel17 June 2017

A small workshop in north London is one of only two in the world that still produces modern handcrafted globes.

Hackney-based globemakers Bellerby & Co. was founded in 2008 by Peter Bellerby in response to his desire to find his father a gift for his 80th birthday.

After failing to find the right globe, he decided to create his own.

He claims he threw away 150 globes before getting the technique right, but it inspired him to turn his new passion into a business.

Creating a globe can take up to three months. (AP)

Bellerby & Co. works on commission and every globe created is unique. It’s a complicated and meticulous process.

It takes approximately three months to create a globe. The globemaker will start with making the sphere. They will then apply the map, divided into pieces. The enterprise in very meticulous.

The craft requires meticulousness and patience. (AP)

Peter explains: “On a large globe, there are twenty [pieces]. If you are 0.1 millimetre out, which is not that much, on each one, negatively, then you are 1.2 millimetres out.”
