If you’re one of the hardier motorcyclists who brave winter with an open-face helmet, get 2018 off to a fresh start with a smart new pair of goggles - and we’re talking super-smart, as they don’t come more stylish than the ‘Cafe Racer’ from Italian firm Ethen, new to motorcycling but with pedigree in the ski and extreme sports markets.
These £75 goggles add a dash of high style, with a look that’s part retro aviator, part steampunk, part sci-fi. What particularly sets them apart is that they are, in effect, frameless, with the elasticated strap fitting directly to the corner of the pleasingly shaped, UV-blocking lens.
Coupled with double density foam, also attached to the lens, it makes getting a close fit easy and comfortable - with plenty of room for your nose. The lack of a rugged motocross-style frame not only makes them lightweight but also opens up your field of vision; vital in London traffic where thick edges can mask hazards on the road.
The high quality lenses are lightly smoked, and sparingly perforated, to combat misting. Peacocks will like the fact that the strap is Velcro-attached, and can be swapped out with other designs; there are many, colourful ones to choose from. They even come in a useful, equally well-made carrying pouch that doubles as a cleaning cloth, so look after it.
I’ve found that these beautifully designed goggles work best with jet-style helmets, although some find they work with full face lids too.
