Whilst Friday 13th may be unlucky for some, it also marks the 14th annual Roald Dahl Day; a time to remember the British author who has enchanted children around the world with his imaginative tales.

It's been almost 60 years since his first children's book was published, and yet the stories of Roald Dahl continue to delight.

To celebrate his wonderful library of work, many kids will be going to school today dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character, from Willie Wonka to Matilda.

Here, we take a look back at some of the author's most memorable quotes:

1.) "If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books."

2.) "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic at all will never find it."

3.) "I love writing and reading about horrible people. They are much more fun than nice people."

4.) "A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it."

5.) "If you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it at full speed. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good."

6.) "A life is made up of a great number of small incidents and a small number of great ones."

7.) "Most of the really exciting things we do in our lives scare us to death. They wouldn't be exciting if they didn't."

8.) "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

9.) "There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you'll be free if you truly wish to be free."

10.) "Our children are marvellous... and happy, and I like to think that all my storytelling has contributed a little bit to their happiness."
