The beach is back: sun-soaked privacy on South Andros island in the Bahamas

Getting to the Tiamo Resort on South Andros island in the Bahamas is no small feat. There was the long haul to Miami, then the flight from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas’ brightly coloured capital, then another to South Andros Mangrove Cay airport where we were greeted by a car, which drove us to a port. Just when we thought we couldn’t travel any further, a speedboat showed up. Twenty minutes later, we finally arrived.

Once there, the scene was breathtaking, and as private as you can get. There’s no other resort on South Andros, which is the ultimate Caribbean dream of palm trees and white sandy beaches. The property is small with only a dozen rooms, mostly one-bedroom cabins with their own pools.

Dinner is served in the candlelit Great Room: think local fish, rice and crisp salads, all delicious. But the best thing about the Tiamo is that they understand that even in paradise, it’s good to have something to do. So there are day trips (we ventured to Nassau, where we feasted on gourmet burgers at the One&Only Ocean Club) and countless watersports.

We tried kayaking, snorkelling and paddle-boarding, managing to dodge a huge stingray. By home time, we were virtually pros — and planning our return. The never-ending journey? It was most definitely worth it.
