The discerning drinker: Most refreshing white wines
On humid evenings like these, I need a white wine to refresh — something with some zip to it. These fit the bill nicely.
Salomon Undhof Hochterrassen Grüner Veltliner 2009, Kremstal (Lea & Sandeman, £9.95)
I'm kind of at a loss to understand why Austria's grüner veltliner isn't more popular — although granted, it's not especially cheap. This is packed with trademark zippy, peppery, lime fruit and a streak of minerality.
Domaine J-M Sorbe Reuilly Blanc 2008 (Lea & Sandeman, £11.75)
Reuilly is a small Loire appellation just west of Sancerre, which is mostly outshone by its more famous neighbour. But it can produce sauvignons which are just as delicious. This is nearer the fruitier/juicier end of the spectrum for a Loire sauvignon but elegant, racy and mineral still.
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Sancerre 2009 (£12.29)
Classic Sancerre (pictured), bone dry and shot through with minerality, made by impressive young winemaker Florian Mollet. When I met Mollet in London last year he'd brought along flints from his vineyard to show off the terroir: you can taste that soil here. Good value for this quality.
Framingham Classic Riesling 2008, Marlborough (Selfridges, £13.99)
This Kiwi riesling boasts wonderfully pure fruit: the kind of intense lime flavours you'd expect from a Clare Valley riesling, but a touch more floral. Very attractive.
Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling 2008, Clare Valley (Harrods, reduced to £12.50 until 23 Aug)
From Australia's foremost riesling area, this has classic Clare Valley aromas of petrol and lime, and a palate packed with juicy citrus fruit. So refreshing.
