A highly Instagrammable Old Town, cafe culture and independent shops are just some of the boxes Cologne ticks, says Milly Kenny-Ryder

When planning a trip to Germany, most would predictably settle on Berlin or Munich; however Cologne ticks a surprising number of boxes as a great city break destination. Just one hour from London by plane, it is quick and easy to reach, and thanks to the lack of mass tourism you will quickly feel immersed in the culture of the city.

Here are 10 reasons to visit:

1. Altstadt (The Old Town)

Much of Cologne was destroyed in World War II, leaving just a tiny area of historic streets remaining. The colourful old town is wonderful to wander round, especially when you consider what it has survived. Relax with a beer by the river and join the Instagram queue to photograph the picturesque houses near St Martin's Church.

2. Stylish (& Cheap) Accommodation

There is stylish accommodation to be found all over Cologne, from design hotels to cosy Airbnb lodgings. Die Wohngemeinschaft is a well-known hostel in the heart of the trendy Belgian Quarter, nearby to the main attractions of the town centre. The rooms are each designed in a different style, with quirky antique furniture and lots of natural light. All the rooms are extremely well-kept and equipped with modern facilities. It is so clean and comfortable it feels more like a hotel, but with such low prices this hostel is suitable for any traveller’s budget.

3. Café Culture

Cologne is a popular student city and consequently offers a diverse range of cheap and hip restaurants and bars. Whether you are in need of a vegan brunch or full three-course dinner, they have it all. Head to Salon Schmitz for a light lunch in the café before heading next door for dessert at the ice-cream parlour, or if you are feeling really decadent opt for a piece of their famous cheesecake.

In the evening enjoy a long and lazy dinner at lively tapas bar Meister Gerhard, be sure to accompany your meal with a glass of German Reisling. For something really special, head to the only 2-Michelin star restaurant in Cologne, Le Moissonnier, for their exquisite French cuisine.

4. The Cathedral

Cologne’s giant cathedral (Kolner Dom) is the city’s most recognised building. The magnificent twin spires rise high above the city, and the interior is filled with precious art and religious treasures. For a work-out, climb the 533 steps up the Dom's South Tower to see panoramic views of the city down below.

5. Thriving Cocktail Scene

The cocktail scene in Cologne is growing at speed and the choices are plentiful. Toddy Tapper seems to be popular with locals in the know. The bar is barely signposted, but once inside you’ll be well looked after by the attentive staff and it is impossible not to have a good time. Sit at the bar and order a Perigord Paradox, made from Whisky, Walnut bitters and orange syrup.

6. Galleries and Museums

Cologne hosts the annual ‘Art Cologne’ fair that ensures it is very much involved in the international art scene. There are plenty of wonderful galleries and museums to satisfy culture fans, whether you are interested in historic classical works or cutting-edge modern exhibitions. Museum Ludwig is one of the largest museums and is dedicated to modern art. Many visit for the impressive collection of Picasso paintings but they also host exciting temporary exhibitions showcasing the work of artists from Germany and further afield.

7. Independent Shops

Creatives are opening up inspiring shops all over Cologne. Head to the hipster Ehrenfeld area where you’ll find Kornerstrasse Street with its cluster of appealing shops and cafes. Utensil is a design lover’s heaven. The shop is run by Cologne designer Anna Lederer who collects and sells simple but beautiful everyday products. It is also worth visiting the modern Van Dyck café while in the area. For Scandi inspired homeware and stationery head to Gold Kant or How We Live.

8. Speciality Coffee

Much like the rest of Europe, speciality coffee is a growing trend in Cologne. There are a few small businesses worth seeking out who are making their mark roasting high quality delicious coffee. Ernst Kaffeerosterei should be any caffeine-lovers first stop. Ernst roast their own beans and pour it to perfection, serving smooth and rich coffee with a delicious flavour. This quiet, hipster cafe is always full with students working and friends catching up. The Coffee Gang is also worth visiting, a tiny café ideally located in the centre of town.

9. Spa Heaven

For an afternoon of blissful relaxation head to Claudius Therme, Cologne’s thermal baths. Located in the heart of the Rheinpark and surrounded by lush greenery, this spa is a real refuge after busy city sightseeing. After resting in the soothing hot pools, head outside to the (all-naked) saunas and let go of your inhibitions. The honey and salt sauna is particularly good for revitalising and refreshing your body.

10. Bonn

The charming city of Bonn is just 20 minutes away by train, making it the perfect day trip from Cologne. Bonn was once the capital of West Germany and is remembered best as the birthplace of Beethoven. Wander round the old town before stopping off for a Kölsch beer overlooking the Rhine River.
