Airbnb reveals top 20 trending destinations for travel in 2020

Airbnb has released a list of the top 20 destinations to travel to in 2020.

The list draws on the site's data, taking into account growth in year-on-year bookings, to predict the hottest new places to visit next year.

Whether it's surfing, hiking or medieval castles you're after, consider one of these under-the-radar destinations for next year's adventure.

20. Maastricht, The Netherlands – bookings up +55%

Maastricht is a histtorical Dutch city with a large international student population. In 2020 it will host The European Fine Art Fair‎.

19. Malindi, Kenya – bookings up 88%

With its pristine beaches and marine national park, this historical Kenyan coastal town is a popular destination among divers and wildlife lovers.

18. Kerala, India – bookings up 95%

Kerala is one of South India's most popular states with travellers thanks to its abundant beaches and rolling coffee plantations.

17. Tokyo, Japan – bookings up 103%

While already firmly on the radar, Japan's capital is set to be even more popular next year as it will host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The mountain village of Les Contamines-Montjoie in the French Alps is a popular destination year round among both hikers and skiers.

With its over 100 beaches, Ubatuba is considered the surfing mecca of São Paulo state.

Courtenay, set in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, is a good base for outdoorsy travellers to explore the surrounding area.

The Scottish city has plenty to offer, with a thriving restaurant and gallery scene, as well as stunning coastline.

Cape Canaveral in Florida boasts over 72 miles of beachfront and three large protected areas. Next year it will serve as the launch site of NASA's Mars 2020 Exploration Program.

Vanuatu is an archipelago nation of over 80 rugged islands in the South Pacific Ocean, and offers first-class hiking routes and scuba diving.

The second largest city in Mexico known as the land of tequila and mariachi, also boasts fantastic colonial architecture.

6. Xi'an, China – bookings up 255%

2. Bilbao, Spain – bookings up 402%

Bilbao was named European City of the Year in 2018. Head to the Basque city for rich culture, food and architecture.

1. Milwaukee, US – bookings up 729%

Milwaukee, located in Wisconsin state, tops Airbnb's trending list, with searches up a whopping 729 per cent. It boasts a thriving bar and restaurant scene, as well as over 105 miles of bike lanes and will next year host the Democratic National Convention.
