In 2018, the launch of the London to Amsterdam Eurostar service meant visiting our neighbour was that much more accessible – the service simply amplifying Amsterdam's position as the perfect weekend city break.

Behind the canal-facing homes lies a myriad of hotels waiting to welcome guests, so it can sometimes be a minefield deciding where to stay.

Pulitzer Amsterdam’s 2016 revamp saw the hotel hone its quirky style while staying true to its rich heritage. An intricate maze of 25 Golden Age canal houses, this iconic hotel is located in the vibrant Nine Streets neighbourhood with star attractions on its doorstep. Rooms here are punchy with pops of colour and light streaming in through the large windows. The multi-level suites are ideal for small families or those needing extra space and, come night time, choose from one of its two restaurants or indulge in a tipple at the in-house bar.

In the atmospheric Jordaan district, the 23-room Canal House is a delightful addition to Amsterdam’s hotel scene. Part of the Curious Group of Hotels – which also own Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds and Portobello Hotel in London – Canal House is spread across three flat-fronted seventeenth century merchant houses. Interiors here are dark and intimate, with sensuous palette of rich purples, dark coppers and bold blacks. Formerly a home for ‘cultural bohemians’, Breitner House is now a hotel with just two luxury suites. Don’t let the intimate setting put you off, however, as each of the suites is ornately decorated with the ceilings dripping in chandeliers and the walls adorned with art, retaining that romantic period charm. The daily champagne breakfast is served in the dining room overlooking Oosterpark and is presented among a banquet of flowers and fruit with platters of cheese, melons and homemade Dutch apple pie. Breitner House is worth booking for the breakfast alone.

Plush velvets, reflective metallic and indoor street lamps line the shared spaces while the rooms are a more muted play on the colour pop theme.
