Martyn Lawrence Bullard works his interiors magic on this Frank Miller designed boutique retreat...

Where? Perched above the Pacific Ocean in the very heart of Laguna Beach, California. Orange County's arty, laid-back town is reflected in the boutique hotel's chilled out vibes.

The lowdown: The property was originally designed by builder/architecture team Frank Miller and Arthur Benton for Miller’s wife Marion. Made of concrete, stone and pressed-block edifices it is a beautiful structure. Over the years it has changed hands and new buildings have been added, enhancing the layered historical element.

In 1946, it became Casa Laguna. It was a hotel and later as an artists’ colony until 1977 when it was converted into a bed and breakfast. Fast forward to 2014 and Casa Laguna was sold to a PRG partnership that restored the Spanish Colonial architecture to create a luxury boutique escape. Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard has done an incredible job of adding an abundance of character and colour to every corner of this dreamy guesthouse.

What can I expect from my accommodation? Each of the 23 rooms has been given that signature flamboyant Bullard touch. Moroccan influences include Moorish tiles and ceramics and eclectic furnishings. The designer’s custom fabric prints and ceiling decorations add flair. The colour scheme revolves around ocean blues and deep reds making for a crisp yet sumptuous environment.

On the menu: The complimentary continental breakfast is a delight. Enjoy it in the secret garden style courtyard or the cosy lounge and dining area. Some of the offerings include homemade pastries, muffins quiches, yoghurt, chia and juices. All fresh and full of flavour.

Anything else I should know? There is a gorgeous pool, just off the courtyard, surrounded by palm trees and deckchairs. Plus, a small indoor and outdoor spa, the latter of which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Book in advance for a variety of massage techniques such as Deep Tissue, Reflexology and Hot Stone.

How do I get there? John Wayne Airport is just a short drive away. Alternatively, fly into LAX and experience the scenic drive along Pacific Coast Highway or take the Amtrak train from Union Station to Orange County.
