Glasgow Rocks: Glasgow prepares to host the MOBO awards

Bustling Buchanan Street
10 April 2012

Forget Trainspotting, the Gorbals, the tedious "See you, Jimmy" jokes. Glasgow is an intoxicating place to be right now. Within minutes of stepping off the train at Glasgow Central, and walking down Argyle Street and into St Enoch's Square, I find strangers being among the most helpful and welcoming I have ever met.

Glasgow also has many layers of history. This was best revealed with a stroll along the Clyde, the river upon which the city and its economy is shaped.

As I headed back to London, I was reminded of Mackintosh's most famous quote: "Art is the flower. Life is the green leaf. Let every artist strive to make his flower a beautiful living thing." With the city as their flower, Glaswegians have certainly striven, sometimes against great odds. They have certainly succeeded.

Virgin Trains run from Euston to Glasgow Central, returns from £68, www.virgintrains.co.uk. Saint Judes Hotel has doubles from £115 room only, www.saintjudes.com.
