Incredible video shows woman trekking through the Himalayas with no modern technology

Elise Wortley vowed to follow in the footsteps of the 20th century explorer, Alexandra David-Neel

Climbing the Himalayas is a well known challenge but what about doing it with absolutely zero technology? That’s what Elise Wortley decided to do.

Inspired by the Belgian-French explorer, Alexandra David-Neel, who travelled Asia for 14 years to “show the world what the will of a woman can do”, Wortley had the idea to follow in her footsteps to see first-hand what it was to achieve surmounting the mountain range back then.

Only wearing the clothes and items that would have been available in the 1920s, alongside two other women, Wortley completed the first leg of David-Neel's trek this year.

An employee of Exodus Travel, Wortley has always been passionate about travel. At 16, she trekked the Indian Himalayas for the first time, travelled every summer of university and lived in Canada for six months but it’s women in travel that particularly interest her.

Writing on her website, she says: “The aim of the expedition was to raise awareness of women’s rights in travel, encourage others not to be afraid to take on a challenge, highlight female leaders and prove how hard Alexandra's journey really was back in the early 1900s. I want to show that women were, and still are, at the forefront of adventure and shaping the way in which we travel.”

Through this project, Wortley is raising money for the women's charity Freedom Kit Bags. You can find out more about it and how to donate here. Watch the above video to see her journey.
