You Beauty! Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color - review

Bobbi Brown has produced a new range of lipsticks called Luxe Lip Color that I think you need to know about. Tremendously wearable, they are lipsticks for non-lipstick people. There seems to be some mystery ingredient in the creamy bullet that makes new things feel possible.

I’ll give you an example: a plummy shade called Your Majesty that looks a bit purple and scary in the tube but glides on just so. Not too shouty. Not too Gothic. Not too ‘today I’m actively going for a berry lip’, which is always a bit awkward. Just richness, pigment and glamour. Lovely and fresh worn with no eye make-up; elegant and polished with a full face.

But my favourite is a trickier customer called Mod (above). A washed-out lip with a smoky/smudgy eye is my absolute ideal, but it’s hard to pull together. Mod isn’t a flattering nude — it’s pallid. But it totally works and here’s how: you just need a whisper. Dot it on as though it’s a really bright stain, then blend it with your finger and you’re left with that dreamy but difficult-to-achieve 1960s Marianne Faithfull vibe without looking dated. It’s not a standalone lip. It’s an atmospheric lip that contributes to an overall effect. It won’t even be noticed.

And so the malleable Luxe Lip range offers an opportunity to broaden your lipstick horizons. For me it’s Mod, but for you it might be Sunset Orange as a way into a red lip, or Hot Rose as an experiment with proper pink. Either way, it’s worth a trying-on session.
