You beauty! The cabinet of wonders

Annabel Rivkin's cabinet of wonders

Don’t know much about art. Was always cack-handed in that department. But I do kind of know that there are brushes for oils, others for watercolours, more for gouache and so on. You fit the brush to the paint. If brushes are sub-standard, the texture is compromised.

And make-up is like acting: sometimes you want people to see what you have done, to absorb that sense of performance, but often they just need to… believe.

Enough with the similes. Oh, actually, here’s one more: I don’t wear fur but the Tom Ford Bronzer Brush is like the sable coat of my make-up armour. Fat and soft and weighty, it disperses product with furry aplomb and even looking at its camp, white bristles makes me feel slinky.

Once a base — tinted moisturiser or foundation — has gone on, you need to sweep a fine layer of translucent powder over the top before getting busy with bronzer, or that pigmented powder will cling to the creamy base with resulting smears and splodges that won’t fool anyone into thinking the sun has kissed your brow, caressed your cheekbones, caught your jawline. Ford’s fatty-boom-boom brush delivers that invisible powder, and then it can return, lightly bronzer-laden, to sweep the tan into place.

This plumptious tool doesn’t shed bristles, doesn’t kink out of shape and doesn’t get raggedy. It’s pricey, but it’s a lifer.
