Play shines a light on father of theatre

Big influence: Ben Chaplin with co-stars Jemma Redgrave, left, and Tara Fitzgerald
10 April 2012

Actor Ben Chaplin hopes a new play about a pioneering actor-director gets him the recognition he deserves.

Richard Nelson's Farewell to the Theatre looks at the middle years of Harley Granville Barker (1877-1946), writer of The Voysey Inheritance and Waste.

"He was massively influential. He made the modern theatre," said Chaplin, 42, who lives in Battersea and the US and starred in The Thin Red Line and Remains of the Day. The play also stars Tara Fitzgerald and Jemma Redgrave. Farewell to the Theatre runs from March 1 until April 7 at the Hampstead Theatre.
