A suspect bottle attacker was chased by police through a busy town square before he was bundled into a water fountain and arrested.

Crowds of spectators watching the Commonwealth Games on a giant outdoor screen in Woolwich looked on in alarm as the drama unfolded.

Officers were called to the town’s General Gordon Square after reports a fight had broken out between two rival groups watching live coverage of the Glasgow games.

Eyewitnesses told how a man in his 20s was hit across the back of the head with a bottle in the busy square packed with sports fans at 8.30pm last night.

Police called to the scene reportedly chased the suspect on foot before he fell into the pool.

Pictures show the suspect spread-eagled on the ground as he was handcuffed next to a patrol car.

The square was cordoned off for two hours as an investigation was carried out.

One witness said: “Just witnessed a madness in Woolwich, was actually scary to watch.

“There was an argument between a white and Indian family. I think the Indian boy bottled the man at the back of his head.

“Then they where chasing each other round the whole of Woolwich. A few people tried to stop it then the police came and got him.

“He tried to escape and run so the officer chased him down pushed him into the water fountain by the big screen.”

Another witness tweeted: “Just seen a crazy fight in Woolwich. Man got done with a bottle. Nice place this!”

A Met police spokesman said: “Police were called to at approximately 8.25pm to General Gordon Square, Woolwich, to reports of an assault.

“London Ambulance were called to the scene. A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“A man was arrested for affray and is currently in custody.”
